Andreescu captures 1st Slam in US Open main draw debut | Nadal earns his 4th US Open and 19th Major
2019 US Open. Andreescu wins debut Slam. Nadal captures 19th Major
Stadium Announcer Andy Taylor returned to New York in August 2019 to narrate the action inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was his 18th consecutive year as the Voice of the US Open, and a year that foreshadowed future greatness on the ladies side, while another Major title went to a distinguished member of the Big-3 on the mens side .
19-year-old Bianca Andreescu is for real. At this time last year, she was ranked outside the top-200 – but after a breakthrough season that included 3-titles, she earned her 8th top-10 victory of 2019 by defeating 6-time Champion Serena Williams in the Final. She is now the only Canadian – man or woman – to win a Grand Slam Singles title.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal captured his 4th US Open and 19th Grand Slam title in a 5-hour clash versus the hottest talent on Tour. Russian Daniil Medvedev was a force in the Summer of 2019. He reached the Finals in Washington D.C. and Montreal, then captured his first Masters-1000 title in Cincinnati. Down 2-sets and a break in Sunday’s championship match, implausibly he came back to force a deciding-set against one of the most tenacious finishers in tennis history. 2019’s championship match was the longest of the tournament, and just 5-minutes short of the longest US Open championship match in history.
POSTER SPOTTED IN THE NYC SUBWAY:
In Doubles, 23-year-old Elise Mertens and 21-year-old Aryna Sabalenka both earned their first Grand Slam titles – while the Columbians, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah made it back-to-back Majors. The Wimbledon Champions reached their first Grand Slam Final earlier this year at the Australian Open, and will finish the season as 3-time Major Finalists and 2-time Grand Slam Champions.
Finally in Mixed Doubles, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray became the first tandem to successfully defend the Mixed Doubles title in nearly 40-years. Bethanie is now a 4-time Grand Slam Mixed Champion – while Jamie Murray became the first player in the Open Era to win 3 consescutive Mixed US Open titles. Remarkably, the Scot is now a 5-time Grand Slam Mixed Doubles Champion.
