75 YEARS OF BREAKING BARRIERS … 2025 US OPEN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

In 2025, the US Open celebrated ALTHEA GIBSON, a Hall of Famer who broke the color barrier in tennis. In 1950, she became the first Black person to compete in the U.S. National Championships — won back-to-back Singles titles in 1957 and 1958 — secured the World #1 ranking — and ultimately captured 11 total Grand Slam titles over the course of her career. A multisport athlete, in the early 1960’s she also became the first Black golfer on the LPGA Tour. Undeterred by the pervasive racism and prejudice of the age — like Jackie Robinson, Althea Gibson continues to inspire generations.
