Serena Williams clinches Tie for Team USA!

With Serena Williams’ (5-7, 6-1, 6-1) win today here in Worcester, she’s clinched the Group-2 Tie for Team USA over Team Belarus, sending the U.S. to the World Group Playoffs in April.

Team USA clinches the Tie

There are two more rubbers to play…Christina McHale and Darya Kustova are playing now; Victoria Azarenka and Venus Williams are both scheduled to play in doubles with partners Olga Govortsova and Liezel Huber.

Seeing as this was a Group-2 win, potential opponents for Team USA include other Group-2 winners and opening roup World Group Losers. Those from Group-2 joining the U.S. in the World Group Playoffs: Japan, Slovak Republic and Australia. Those who lost their World Group Ties this weekend, and will be included in the World Group Playoff Draw: Spain, Germany, Belgium…and we’re still waiting on the outcome of the Italy vs. Ukraine Tie (all even after four – and deadlocked at 5-all in the first set of the doubles rubber).

So…Good News from Worcester on this Super Bowl Sunday; where we’re really hoping for Good News from Indianapolis later on tonight – Go Patriots!
