LUCID ILLUSIONS. MIDWAY CAFE | BOSTON, MA | 15 April 2023

As a recovering broadcast veteran, back when local radio was today’s Spotify discovery mode, I promoted and emceed hundreds of concerts, gigs and listener appreciation shows.

Admittedly, music is not my passion. But I have firm opinions. Opinions cultivated during two decades of exposure to the business-end of formula-focused, profit-priority labels. If you’ve experienced it, you know.

The formula permeates nearly every hook of the heavily promoted music that ultimately reaches our cochlear nerves. It’s transparent in band branding, overt in artist imaging, and when successfully deployed: Profitable as hell. But at what cost?

Authenticity.

It is tremendously refreshing when, unexpectedly, we discover legit, yet humble talent – not tempted or tickled by the nod-and-wink consultancy of the factory’s financial backing. Original music, for music’s sake. Identity unaffected by “industry experience” and focus groups. Innocent confidence shaped by encouraging families, friends, communities.

We often refer to these artists as “undiscovered” – until, of course, we personally discover them.

Those passionate about new music regularly attend clubs and bars with hopes of discovery. Others, like me, just happen to get lucky.

ENTER 3 RAISED-RIGHT TEXANS WHO INSTINCTUALLY OWN THE STAGE

Last night, I “discovered” LUCID ILLUSIONS.

And while I don’t expect anyone to take the advice of a former broadcaster who openly admits he’s passive (at best) about music, I strongly encourage you to see these young Texans live.

Their collective musicianship is second-nature. Their energy, infectious. Dynamic entertainers determined to deliver a good time. After all, that’s why you’re there in the first place.

Again, when you experience it, you know.
