[15] Bianca Andreescu -15- (CAN) def [Q] Taylor Townsend -116- (USA)
Match recap from Arthur Ashe Stadium announcer Andy Taylor.
Right out of the gate, Taylor Townsend learned she wouldn’t be able to flummox 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu with the all-out, relentless, charge-the-net strategy that worked against Wimbledon Champion Simona Halep. Her adjustments in set-2 extended the match to a decider, but Bianca was simply too sharp at the start of the final set.
The young Canadian is through to her first career Grand Slam Quarterfinal, and $500k richer because of it. A win Wednesday over talented Belgian Elise Mertens earns her $960k and a spot in the US Open Semifinals.
