What a match! In just under 4-hours, hard-serving Italian Matteo Berrettini finally converted his 5th match point to reach his first Major Semifinal. The match should have been over at 5-3 in the 5th, but Berrettini dumped a double-fault on match point. Monfils rallied for the break.
The affliction was contageous.
Gael double-faulted 3-times in the final game of the decider and saved 2 match points to force the tiebreak. The French Showman’s 2 double faults in the breaker cost him the match.

A 3-time Finalist this season – he captured his second ATP Tour Singles title this year in Budapest, won his third in Stuttgart, made his Grand Slam Round of 16 debut at Wimbledon, and climbed to a career-high ranking of World #20. Fans first stood-up and took notice last Summer, when he captured his first ATP Singles and Doubles titles in Gstaad, earning the Singles title without dropping a set. In 2008, as a 20-year-old ranked outside the top-50, he won his first Grand Slam Quarterfinal match at Roland Garros, defeating World #5 David Ferrer to reach the Semifinals at his home Slam. Eight years later, he reached his 2nd Grand Slam Semifinal right here at the US Open. Now 32-years-old, he owns 8 ATP Tour Singles titles, has reached 29 career Finals, and has been ranked as high as World #6. Back in top-form this Summer, he started the season ranked outside the top-30, but after a Semifinal run at the US Open Series event in Montreal, he returns to New York inside the top-15.
