2013 US Open – Week Two

Week two of the 2013 US Open Tennis Championships brought early departures for both Roger Federer and defending US Open Champion Andy Murray, while Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet achieved career milestones. Bob and Mike Bryans’ stab at history was blocked by Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek, while the Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova managed to win two US Open titles. Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka would win their way to a rematch of last year’s Final, while 2010 Champion Rafael Nadal and 2011 Champion Novak Djokovic would play each other for the third time in a US Open title match. Day 8

Week-2 started with rain, and we were only able to complete one Day Session match on Arthur Ashe Stadium: Hantuchova over Riske 6,3, 5-7, 6-2. The rain pushed Roger Federer’s 4th-round match to Louis Armstrong Stadium, where Spain’s Tommy Robredo took-out the five-time US Open champ in straight sets: 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4. For the first time since 2002, Roger Federer did not appear in a Grand Slam Final during the calendar year; and his ranking dropped to #6 in the world.

Flavia Pennetta then took-out countrywoman Roberta Vinci in the 4th: 6-4, 6-1. Needless to say, she’s back from wrist surgery. Day 11

Bob and Mike Bryan were two match-wins away from winning all four Grand Slam titles in 2013. But the defending US Open champions saw their run end in the Semifinals, with a loss to Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek: 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. Looking for his first Grand Slam Semifinal appearance, Stan Wawrinka’s amazing US Open run continued with a three-set win over the defending champion, Andy Murray: 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Stan easily became the favorite underdog to win it all in the Big Apple.
