Who are the Massachusetts Pirates?

The Massachusetts Pirates is an indoor National Arena League football team based in Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 2017, the NAL includes seven teams based on the east coast of the United States.

Owned and managed by former IFL and CAFL quarterback Jawad Yatim, the Massachusetts Pirates reached the playoffs in its first two seasons. Yatim is a 2008 graduate of Shrewsbury High School, and remains the school’s all-time leading passer. He also led the 13-0 Colonials to a state championship his senior season.

From there, Yatim graduated from Mount Ida College as the 3rd all-time leading passer in school history. Additionally, he was a 2-time All-Conference selection and All-American honorable mention. After college, Yatim played two seasons in the Indoor Football League, and suited up for the Dalian Dragon Kings of the China Arena Football League.

Arena Football | The format that refuses to fold

Arena football features 8-man squads on a smaller, indoor, 50-yard fields. The game is designed to fit inside a standard hockey rink, and as a result, delivers higher-scoring games and a faster pace of play.

Originally invented by former NFL executive Jim Foster, Arena football has been around since 1987. The original Arena Football League lasted 22 seasons, from 1987-2008. Additional leagues have formed over the years, however none have financially stood the test of time. In fact, the original league filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and was liquidated.

Still, indoor football refuses to fade as new investors continue to pick up the ball and move the format forward. The National Arena League is one of the latest iterations, originally founded to develop talent for the CFL and NFL.
