Voice Actor Andy Taylor narrates this video illustrating international efforts to establish Rule of Law in Yemen. Sponsors of the campaign include: Firstly, the Government of the Netherlands. Also the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. And finally, the United Nations Peace Building Fund.
Yemen’s humanitarian crisis remains extremely prevalent
20 million Yemenis need humanitarian assistance and protection. Meanwhile, 9.6 million citizens of Yemen are in dire need. Due to the ongoing Civil War between Hadi and Houthi factions, the escalation of armed conflict has amplified social imbalance among families and communities. As a result, immeasurable human rights violations have occurred. Particularly toward women and children.
In order to counter and resolve the current challenges, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a Rule of Law initiative. In corporation with Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY), the program is designed to address four key needs:
- Enhanced security
- Safety
- Protection
- Human rights at all levels.
Rule of Law Programme – Specific Intervention
The program is a joint venture with UNICEF and UN-Women. It is focused on two types of intervention: Rehabilitation and Building Capacities. Additionally, there are four pillars of intervention: Community Security, Access to Justice, Police, and Prisons.
The Security and Access to Justice initiatives are underway in Sana’a, Aden, Hodeidah, and Hadramowt. Eventually, both initiatives will scale-up to 10 additional regions. But the program’s growth depends on results.
In conclusion, the project is intended to…
- Improve protection of communities through policing
- Provide full support to the justice sector
- Improve basic conditions in detention centers and prisons, particularly the special needs of women and children
- Reactivate the operational capacity of Criminal Justice actors in urban areas
These stated initiatives will assist the UN’s efforts in Yemen to build peace and stability. As a result, these efforts will mitigate the impact of severe conflict in the country.
