TENNIS: Injuries start the season in ’12

So Roger Federer bowed-out of the Exxon Mobile in Doha today – electing not to play in his semi-final match with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (back trouble…already). Roger said the cooler temperatures in Doha didn’t help matters – most analysts will tell you the decision was a wise one, if he plans on winning another Australian Open. Thanks to Stephan Edberg for saving the day, giving tennis fans something to see at Khalifa Stadium…the retired great took the court for some exhibition fun vs. Jo-Wilfried in Roger’s absense. Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils are in the other semifinal today.

Serena injured her left ankle while serving in Brisbane, and Kim Clijsters retired with an injury as well. Francesca Schiavone went ahead and played, but was crushed by a little known Estonian – and after the match, Francesca complained of having stomach trouble throughout the match.

So – a rocky start to the 2012 tennis season…
