After the first day of play, the U.S. leads Belarus (2-0) here in Worcester. Both Christina McHale and Serena Williams won their matches over Anastasiya Yakimova and Olga Govortsova, respectively. As of right now, they’re expected to switch opponents for the first two singles matches today, followed by a doubles match with Venus Williams and Liezel Huber vs. Victoria Azarenka and Olga Govortsova…
HOWEVER…with Belarus’ backs against the wall, don’t be surprised if the current Australian Open Champion and World #1 Victoria Azarenka decides to play in the first match against Serena…they have until 11:00 EST to make the change – we’ll see what happens! Vika declined to play yesterday because of a back injury.
In other Group-2 play – Japan, Slovak Republic and Australia all advanced over their opponents. Winners of Group-2 play will play this weekend’s losers in World Group play April 21st and 22nd. Losers in the World Group so far include Spain and Germany – matches continue as I write between Belgium vs. Serbia and Ukraine vs. Germany. Russia and the Czech Republic have advanced to the Semifinals in the World Group.
So…we look forward to an action-packed afternoon of tennis here at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA – as we also prepare for the Super Bowl tonight between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. What a great weekend to be in New England!
