[5] Elina Svitolina -05- (UKR) def [10] Madison Keys -09- (USA)
Match recap from Arthur Ashe Stadium announcer Andy Taylor.
In 3 of the past 9 Majors, Svitolina and Keys have met in the 4th Round. The trend began at the 2017 US Open, where Madison won in three. She then blasted through exhausted qualifier Kai Kanepi to reach her first Grand Slam Final.
This past January, it was Elina’s turn. At the Australian Open, she eliminated Keys in three to reach her 4th career Grand Slam Quarterfinal, where she fell to the eventual champion Naomi Osaka.
Tonight, both played to their strengths and delivered the stat-lines you’d expect. Lots of unforced errors with nearly an equal number of winners for Keys. Consistency and limited unforced errors from Svitolina, always ready to wear down her opponent through precise shot-placement.
The difference maker tonight was Elina’s serve. She didn’t offer Madison a single break opportunity the entire match.
