[23] Stan Wawrinka -23- (SUI) def [1] Novak Djokovic -01- (SRB)
Match recap from Arthur Ashe Stadium announcer Andy Taylor.
There have been rumblings all week about Novak’s left shoulder. He received several visits from the physio during his Round-2 victory over Juan Ignacio Londero, then dodged questions about the his condition in every interview. It’s an injury he’s carried for quite some time. Unfortunately for the defending champion, the pain peaked this week.
That said, Stan Wawrinka was tough to beat – bum shoulder or not. Now two years into his return from knee surgery, the 2016 Champion is back in vintage form with the most devastating backhand in the game.
Perhaps if Novak had taken a Medial Time Out on set-3’s first changeover – played a few points and THEN retired – he would have avoided the cascade of boos that accompanied his exit from the stadium.
