Wow. That was ugly. Happy 30th birthday to Carla Suarez Navarro, who survived an error-packed 4th-Rounder against 2006 US Open Champion Maria Sharapova on Monday night.
How bad was it? Sharapova ended the night with 38 unforced errors and 8 double faults. Seriously. Carla won the match with 20 unforced errors and 3 double faults. Tough one to watch. The colorful match recap below is pretty revealing.
Carla will have to clean up her act in the Quarterfinals, where she’ll face last year’s Finalist Madison Keys. She and Madison have met three times, most recently in Rio’s Olympic Games 2-summers-back. All of their matches have gone the distance. Carla has yet to win one.

Over the weekend, she upset World #6 Caroline Garcia to reach her 3rd consecutive Round of 16 here in New York. Ranked as high as World #6, she owns 2 WTA Singles titles; and last week – at the US Open Series event in New Haven – played in her 11th career Tour-level Final, defeating World #5 Petra Kvitova en-route to the championship match. In 2008, at just 20-years-old, she reached the French Open Quarterfinals in her Grand Slam debut, and is now a 6-time Quarterfinalist at the Majors. She owns 36 WTA Singles titles, is a Fed Cup Champion, won the WTA Finals in her 2004 debut, and has spent 21-weeks as the World #1.
