2014 Week-14: WTA in Charleston and Monterrey

As the 14-seed in Charleston, Germany’s Andrea Petkovic won her third career WTA title over the weekend; her first title since winning Strasbourg 3-years ago. Since her first top-10 season in 2011, Andrea’s had to launch several comebacks from injury (back, ankle, knee). With the title in Charleston, she’s back in the top-30.

Miami Champion Serena Williams had a first-round bye in Charlerston, then was shocked in the second-round by eventual finalist Jana Cepelova from Slovakia (4-6, 4-6). In doubles, the #1 team in the world Su-Wei Hsieh and Shuai Peng were defeated in the first-round for the second consescutive tournament. After winning the title at Indian Wells, the pair was eliminated in Miami’s first-round by Kimiko Date-Krumm/Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Down 4-5 in the first-set at Charleston, Shuai Peng retired from their match versus Marina Erakovic/Arantxa Parra Santonja.

Ana Ivanovic easily won her 13th career WTA title in Monterrey; her second title of 2014 (Auckland). As the 2-seed in a 32-player draw, she only had to win five matches to raise the trophy. Though she lost her first set of the tournament to Urszula Radwanska and stumbled through a 0-6 second-set hiccup to Magdalena Rybarikova, she delivered a two-set Semifinal win over Caroline Wozniacki, then dominated Jaksic in the Final.

Indian Wells Champion Flavia Pennetta: After a 3rd-round exit to Ivanovic in Miami, she was the top-seed in Monterrey…but fell to veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm in the first-round 5-7, 2-6.
