Next up:

  • The 2014 season will get underway in seven weeks (December 30th), with ATP events in Brisbane, Doha and Chennai. The ladies will launch 2014 in Brisbane, Shenzhen and Auckland.

The 2013 ATP World Tour Finals are about in the books, featuring the top-8 singles players and doubles teams at season’s end. Surprisingly, David Ferrer #3 and Juan Martin del Potro #4 had a rough week in London. Ferrer went 0-3 in round-robin play with losses to Nadal, Berdych and Wawrinka. Juan Martin del Potro had a shot at the semifinals. He and Roger Federer were both (1-1) going into their final match, but Roger rose to the occasion, winning the second set in a tie-break and the third 7-5.

That left nothing but Swiss challengers for the top-two in the game, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who both finished undefeated after round-robin competition. Both Federer and Wawrinka fell easily in the semi’s – Roger losing to Nadal (5-7, 3-6) and Wawrinka dropping to Djokovic (3-6, 3-6).

The 8-team doubles draw has been electric since the first match. The #4 team in the world Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo were undefeated after round-robin play, and even took-down the Bryan Brothers in their first match of the tournament. However, the #6 team Marrero and Verdasco, 2-1 in round-robin play, managed a straight-set knock-out of Dodig and Melo in the semifinals. Bob and Mike Bryan recovered from their early loss, and managed a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over rivals Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares in the semifinals. This was the third time in three weeks these two teams faced each other. Peya and Soares won the Valencia Final 13-11 in the Supertiebreak, while the Bryans won the final in Paris. The Bryans now face David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco in the ATP World Tour Final, a team they’ve defeated twice already this year, both times on clay.

While most on the WTA Tour rest-up for the upcoming 2014 season starting in the next seven weeks, Taipei hosted the WTA 125K Taipei Ladies Open. Belgian 19-year-old Alison Van Uytvanck has won nine ITF Women’s Circuit titles, but her win in Taipei over countrywoman Yanina Wickmayer is without question her biggest accomplishment to date. She and partner Anna-Lena Friedsam were also in the doubles final, but they were defeated in straight-sets by Caroline Garcia and Yaroslava Shvedova. The Taipei WTA Ladies Open was the final of five WTA 125K Series events in 2013.
