The Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2018 Draw Ceremony
Tomorrow’s main-draw ceremony at Doha’s Four Seasons Hotel will introduce three Wild Cards to this year’s Field of 32:
- Doha’s Jabor Al Mutawa
- Tunisian legend Malek Jaziri
- And 3-time Qatar ExxonMobil Open Finalist, Gael Monfils
ATP Tournament Supervisor Lars Graff will conduct the draw at 6:00pm, joined by Feliciano Lopez, Florian Mayer, Guido Pella, Malek Jaziri, and the cadre of international and local media covering this year’s event.
Gael Monfil’s addition to the main-draw was welcome news for the Qatar Tennis Federation, after 2012 Champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga withdrew from the tournament the day after Christmas (wrist injury).
German Cedrik Marcel Stebe replaces Tsonga in the main draw, while Victor Estrella Burgos becomes the first alternate. Cedrik’s story of perseverance is remarkable, after being sidelined for over two years with injuries. Check out his player introduction below.
Will Novak Djokovic be here to defend his back-to-back titles?
Earlier today in Abu Dhabi, Novak Djokovic withdrew from his exhibition match with Roberto Bautista Agut. Here’s the statement from Novak’s website:
“I am terribly disappointed that I am forced to withdraw from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. Unfortunately, in the past few days I started to feel pain in the elbow and after several tests, my medical team has advised me not to risk anything, to withdraw from the tournament and to immediately continue with the therapies,” Novak said. “I am very sad because I was eager to return to playing official matches. I enjoyed the practices and everything I did to get ready for the start of the season, including the tournament in Abu Dhabi, where I always enjoy playing. Now I need to accept this situation, and to wait for the results of the therapies, in order to start playing tennis again and getting back to full rhythm. This might affect the start of the season and the tournament plan, but the decision will be made in the following days.”
We should find out during tomorrow’s draw ceremony if Novak will be in Doha. He’s the 2-time defending champion, with a dominant victory over Rafael Nadal to win the 2016 title, and a deciding-set victory over Andy Murray to win last year’s championship. If Novak is out, then Richard Gasquet will be the only returning champion in the 2018 field.
Oddly enough, Andy Murray was in Abu Dhabi this week to train for the upcoming season, and took Novak’s place, falling to Roberto Bautista Agut 2-6. Both Murray (hip) and Djokovic (elbow) haven’t played a set of Tour-level tennis since their seasons ended last year at Wimbledon.
