World Class Tennis back in Honolulu

For the first time since 1992, Davis Cup Tennis returned to Hawaii March 6-7 at Honolulu’s Neal S. Blaisdell Arena. With Novel Coronavirus spreading globally, the weekend Qualifier between the United States and Uzbekistan was one of the final tennis events played before the worldwide shutdown of sporting events and public gatherings. The day after Team USA’s victory, to prevent the virus’ spread, Indian Wells cancelled the BNP Paribas Open. The Miami Open and events over the next six weeks soon followed.

Since its inception in 1900, Davis Cup has become the world’s largest annual international team competition in sport. Over 130 nations compete every year. Davis Cup embodies the Olympic-style excitement of “nation vs nation” competition, exuding an electric atmosphere unrivaled in the game. For avid fans and tennis newcomers, Davis Cup weekends are entertaining “must-experience” events for the entire family.

Team USA defeats Uzbekistan 4-0

The March Tie in Honolulu was a Davis Cup Qualifier, falling under the new format established in 2019. 24-teams met in 12 cities across the planet, with hopes of earning a place in November’s Davis Cup Finals. Like last year, the week-long Davis Cup Finals in Madrid will feature 18 nations competing for the Davis Cup title. In addition to the 12 Qualifying victors, the Finals will feature last year’s Semifinalists (Russia, Great Britain, Canada and Spain) plus two Wild Card nations (France and Serbia).

On Friday — following the Opening Ceremony at 4:45p — Reilly Opelka and Taylor Fritz won their Singles matches, giving Team USA a 2-0 lead. The 22-year-old tandem teed-up a momentous Tie-clinching win on Saturday for 41-year-old legends Bob and Mike. The Bryans capped their 17-year run with Team USA by earning a 25th Davis Cup victory together in straight sets.

With the Qualifying Tie decided, both teams chose to play one “Dead” Singles match to conclude the weekend. In under an hour, Tommy Paul dispatched Denis Istomin to score victory in his Davis Cup debut. A dominant and affirming win for the 22-year-old – who, a week prior, earned his first career top-10 triumph over Alexander Zverev in Acapulco.

U.S. Davis Cup Team remains undefeated in Hawaii. In pursuit of its 33rd Davis Cup title

28-years-ago, Team USA made its Hawaiian debut at the Mauna Lani Racquet Club on the Big Island. That year — behind Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Rick Leach and John McEnroe — the Americans defeated Argentina 5-0. They went on to eliminate Czechoslovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland to capture the Team’s 30th Davis Cup title. After another overwhelming win on the Islands, Team USA remains undefeated in Hawaii. And this November — without Bob and Mike — the new generation will make another run at the Finals in Madrid, pursuing Team USA’s 33rd Davis Cup title.

With victories over the weekend, other Qualifiers who advanced to the 2020 Davis Cup Finals include: Australia, Austria, Columbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Sweden.

…I just wanted to thank you for dedicated efforts to support Mardy and the players and for collaborating alongside the Hawaii section team to optimize having a week-long celebration of American tennis. Hopefully, there are a few new kids who never would have thought of playing tennis will get involved in a program. You staged a professional tie that had several obstacles to achieve success, no one ever complained and as a team you just got on with it. Thank for your passion and commitment to Team USA and hopefully, they will do really well in Madrid.
