Martina Hingis / Jamie Murray def Hao-Ching Chan / Michael Venus 61 46 [10-8]
Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray are undefeated since joining forces for the first time at Wimbledon. After two weeks together in New York, they’re now the reigning Wimbledon and US Open Champions. Both former World #1’s, they were the heavy favorites coming in, but it took a match tiebreak to deliver.
Michael Venus and and Hao-Ching Chan met for the first time last week, just moments before they were introduced on Court-11 for their 1st-Round match. Four matches later, both can add “US Open Mixed Doubles Finalist” to their resumes. Back in May, Michael won his first Major Doubles Title with partner Ryan Harrison at Roland Garros. Saturday was also Chan’s second Grand Slam Final of 2017. In July, she reached the Championship Match at Wimbledon with partner Monica Niculescu.
All Hingis and Murray in set-1. Clutch play from Chan and Venus in set-2
Martina and Jamie dominated the first set Saturday. They broke Michael Venus twice, and captured the set with a break on Chan. In the second, they were still very much in control, depite Jamie’s drop of serve before the second changeover. Down 3-4, Martina and Jamie scored another clutch break on Chan, but Michael and Hao-Ching broke right back. Michael Venus would hold to force the match tiebreak.
A complete reset for the match tiebreak
Both teams played brilliant tennis in the 10-point decider. Murray started with an ace, and delivered another to level it at 4-all. Down 6-7, Chan launched a backhand winner up the line after a heart-pounding, extended exchange at the net. Chan and Venus won the next point, and found themselves two points away from the title. Unfazed, Murray and Hingis won the final three points to hoist the trophy.
Staggering career accomplishment for Martina Hingis
After winning the Doubles title last year with partner Bruno Soares, Jamie Murray now owns 2 US Open titles in three finals. Today, Hingis became a 24-time Grand Slam Champion, with the possibility of making it 25 by tomorrow. The Hall of Famer won the Singles title as a teenager in 1997. Since then, she’s earned two US Open Doubles titles…and now 2 US Open Mixed Doubles titles. Tomorrow, she’ll take a stab at making it 6 US Opens, as she and Chan Yung-Jan (Hao-Ching’s older sister) battle for the 2017 Doubles title versus Lucie Hradecka and Katarina Siniakova of the Czech Republic.
