Justine Henin and Andy Roddick capture the Singles Titles.
Roddick captures debut Slam. Henin earns second Slam this year
The 2003 US Open featured the rise of American tennis’ next generation. Andy Roddick won his first and only Grand Slam title. He enjoyed a remarkable season, overpowering opponents with his serve. The win over Juan Carlos Ferrero was his 6th title of the year and 11th of his career.
Meanwhile, Belgium’s Justine Henin earned her second career Grand Slam title with a straight-sets win over flexible fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters. With the win, Henin became the first player from Belgium ever to win a US Open Singles title.
In Doubles, Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Soarez successfully defended their title – defeating legend Martina Navratilova, who’d teamed with Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova. Remarkably, it was Martina’s 84th Grand Slam Final (Singles: 18-Wins, 14-Runner-up / Doubles: 31-Wins, 6-Runner-up / Mixed Doubles: 9-Wins, 6-Runner-up).
25-year-old American twins Bob and Mike Bryan – who won their first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros back in May – appeared in their first US Open Championship match, falling to legends Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge. It was Bjorkman’s 6th career Grand Slam title and Woodbridge’s 15th.
Bob Bryan redeemed last year’s Mixed Doubles loss to brother Mike, earning the title with partner Katarina Srebotnik.
