The Final is set here in Doha: [6] Angelique Kerber vs. [7] Simona Halep. Not really what anyone expected coming-in – with names like Na Li, Ana Ivanovic, Samantha Stosur and Agnieszka Radwanska in the draw; but two very deserving players based on their perfomances this week.
In Saturday’s first Semifinal, Angelique Kerber was aggressive from the coin-toss and dominated the first set 6-1. Jelena Jankovic finally woke up after delivering a sick cross-court pass (down 1-2, 15-40 in the second) and took the second set to a tie-break. After her match with Jankovic in Brisbane (won the first-set in a tie-break, then faded in the second and third) – for Kerber, losing the tie-break was not an option; and she managed to win it 7-5 on a net cord. Sunday will be her 10th WTA final, as she goes for her 4th title.
Simona Halep can do no wrong in Doha. Even with “Achilles issues,” her court coverage and shot-making have been tremendous. There was doubt early on in her Semifinal, down 1-5 to Agnieszka Radwanska, but then the Romanian rattled-off 8 consecutive games and took complete control of the match. With six titles alone last year, she’s in the hunt for #7 in her 10th WTA tour level final.
