Newport Opera House Theater. Restoring the Jewel of the Community
The elegant Newport Opera House Theater has been a world-class Newport, Rhode Island landmark since it first opened in 1867. Legends of entertainment graced the stage and roamed the halls of the architectural marvel. Performers like Douglas Fairbanks, John Barrymore, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Duke Ellington all contributed to the building’s rich cultural history.
In the 1920’s, Newport Opera House Theater reinvented itself as a single-screen movie palace. It brought both live shows and Hollywood movies to the region. Then in the late 1970’s, contractors transformed the structure into a triplex movie theater, and the Newport Opera House Theater continued to entertain Rhode Islanders through 2010.
The Next 50 Years. A Performing Arts Center for Future Generations
When the theater was shuttered in 2010, preservationists got to work restoring the Newport Opera House Theater’s original architectural grandeur, with 21st century amenities. Thanks to special grants and an outpouring of generosity across Newport, it is anticipated that the restoration and renovation will be completed by the Summer of 2018 – the historic landmark’s 150th anniversary.
