The 2009 US Open Champions

At the 2009 US Open, Juan Martin del Potro won his first Grand Slam Singles title, ending Roger Federer’s five-year dominance in Flushing Meadows. Federer appeared in his sixth consecutive Final, falling in five sets. After retiring from the sport in 2007 and a year after haivng her first daughter – remarkably, Kim Clijsters won her second US Open title, defeating Caroline Wozniacki. It was Kim’s third appearance in the US Open Final (W-2005, F-2003). 10-years after winning the US Open Doubles title, Serena and Venus Williams teamed to win it again, defeating defending champions Cara Black and Liezel Huber (Venus and Serena also earned Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009). In his third consecutive year in the Men’s Doubles Final, Lukas Dlouhy finally earned the title, teaming with Leander Paes to defeat Mahesh Bhupathi (2002 US Open Doubles Champion) and Mark Knowles (2004 US Open Doubles Champion). In Mixed Doubles, Americans Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrot pulled-off an upset over defending champions Cara Black and Leander Paes – Leander’s third conseutive year in the Mixed Doubles Final and second consecutive year appearing in two US Open Finals.
