US Open Series – Rafa and Serena in the hunt!

An ATP Masters 1000 event for the guys and a WTA Premier event for the ladies, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams both chose Canada’s Rogers Cup as their first hard-court tune-up to reclaim the US Open title. After a disappointing first-round loss at Wimbledon, Rafa pulled off his 4th Masters 1000 win this year alone – the 25th of his career. He now owns 58 career singles titles overall. Meanwhile world #1 and defending US Open Champion Serena Williams crushed all comers to convincingly win her 7th title of the year and 53rd of her career. Though he missed Australia, Nadal has been 2013’s dominant men’s force, with another French Open crown and an overall record of 48-3. Of the eleven tournaments he’s played in 2013, he’s reached the final in 10 of them – the only exception being Wimbledon.

In Montreal, after his win in Atlanta and finals-appearance in Washington D.C., John Isner was bounced from the Rogers Cup early, but managed to maintain his points-lead in the Emirates Airline US Open Series standings. Rafa posted a win over Wimbledon finalist Jerzy Janowitz, a third-set tie-break win over Novak Djokovic, before easily dispatching fan-favorite Milos Raonic in the final 6-2, 6-2.

  • Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares won the Rogers Cup doubles title over Andy Murray and Colin Fleming 6-4, 7-6(4).

In Toronto, Agnieszka Radwanska continued to play well, and despite losing to Serena in the semifinals, maintained her spot atop the standings in the Emirates Airline US Open Series. Serena Williams went on to take-out Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the final 6-2, 6-0. She defeated all of her Rogers Cup opponents in straight-sets, including Magdalena Rybarikova in the Quarterfinals, who was coming off a title-win in Washington D.C.

  • Jelena Jankovic and Katarina Srebotnik won the Rogers Cup doubles title in a thriller over Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke 5-7, 6-2, 10-6.

This week: Week-4 features another ATP Masters 1000 and WTA Premier combined event in Cincinnati – The Western and Southern Open.
