Preparing for Hurricane Irene in New York

Hey all – here’s what I can tell you from New York:

  • Governor Cuomo has issued a State of Emergency through the weekend
  • All transit service, across the five boroughs will be shut-down tomorrow at Noon, and will reopen when safe
  • 300,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate flood-prone areas of NYC by 5p Saturday
  • 91 evacuation centers are setting up across NYC and should be open by 4p this afternoon
  • Full storm conditions should hit NYC by Saturday Night
  • This is New York’s first Hurricane Warning since 1985 (Gloria) – I played football practice in that storm just outside Boston
  • Mayor Bloomberg has revoked all permits for weekend events in NYC – Examples: Dave Matthews Band Concert, Arthur Ashe Kids Day at U.S. Open, both Mets Games – all cancelled
  • All construction work has been halted through 7:00a Monday (Mayor issued a “no work order”) – so crews are strapping down their gear at Ground Zero and across the boroughs, including here in Queens with crews setting up for the U.S. Open

They don’t typically go crazy over weather events up here – severe weather is always an afterthought…this is different.

Listen for updates online at www.ktts.com – Should Irene get ugly up here near Laguardia, I’ll be reporting back to the KTTS News Team.
