Orange County exacts revenge on Roddick at home

Up 15-9 at halftime in Orange County, it appeared the Springfield Lasers were on their way to back-to-back wins over the Breakers last night. Enter Coco Vandeweghe, who has been playing lights-out this season. In Womens Singles, she’s 5-1 with her only loss coming to Sacramento’s Taylor Townsend. Prior to the start of the 2013 season, she’d only played Springfield’s Vania King once before, at last year’s Citi Open in Washington D.C. Vania won that match 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

The head-to-head meant nothing to Coco Friday night, as she took out Vania 5-3 in the 4th event. Last night, also the 4th event, she managed to break Vania twice during the set and won it 5-2, leaving the come-from-behind win up to Steve Johnson – who had lost a squeaker to Andy Roddick the night before.

With the Lasers still up 17-14, Steve dug-in and got to work on his return of serve. Breaking Roddick twice in the event – once on a 3-all deciding point – Johnson leveled the overall score to 19-all, forcing the Super Tiebreak. In a heart-breaker for Roddick, Steve scored a couple mini-breaks and pulled off the comeback win for the Orange County Breakers, winning the Super Tiebreak 7-4.

Always competitive, even in retirement, you know the loss was devastating for Andy Roddick, as it was an opportunity for him to deliver on a pivotal moment for his team. Andy finishes his run with the Lasers 2-3 overall in Mens Singles, 4-2 with Jean-Julien Rojer in Mens Doubles.

Rik De Voest won the first Mens Singles match of the season for the Lasers against Amir Weintraub, and has been selflessly cheering-on his team from the bench ever since. Monday night, De Voest and his consistent play will be back at the helm for the Lasers, ready to deliver what have been elusive Mens Singles wins for his team.
