Kastles are King with Hingis

Without Martina Hingis, the Washington Kastles are 1-2; with Martina Hingis: 5-0. She wasn’t playing the night Texas snapped the historic 34-match win-streak; nor was she there the following night when Springfield schooled the Kastles 22-15 in D.C. Martina’s elevated play is exciting news for fans ready to witness her WTA doubles come-back at this year’s New Haven Open – the final ladies event in the US Open Series before play begins in Flushing.

That said, you can’t take anything away from Bobby Reynolds’ stellar play for Washington. Since Kevin Anderson’s departure, Bobby has been 4-0 in Mens Singles, with another dominating 5-1 win over Springfield’s Rik DeVoest in the first event last night. Bobby’s win set the stage for Martina’s domination of Alisa Kleybanova, 5-2 – and the Kastles were out to a 10-3 lead in the match. In Mens Doubles, DeVoest and Jean-Julien Rojer stepped-up with a 5-2 win over Leaner Paes and Reynolds. Vania King and Kleybanova then tightened the gap with a 5-3 win over Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova. At 16-13 going into Mixed Doubles, it was a huge ask for Rojer and Kleybanova to take down a tandem of legends. Paes and Hingis won the set 5-2, and Washington won the match 21-15.

Now even with Orange County for the best record in the Western Conference, the Lasers need to get back to their winning ways tonight at home against (3-5) Sacramento. The Capitals have lost five consecutive matches since starting the season 3-0. Surging Orange County is in Albany tonight to take on the 4-4 New York Sportimes, who lost a tough one in Philadelphia last night.
