Davis Cup – Spain vs. Argentina in the Final

It’ll be Spain vs. Argentina in the Davis Cup Final, December 2nd through the 4th…in Spain.

Rafael Nadal was unbeatable, despite jet-lag…just four days removed from his loss to Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open Final. Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, was still suffering back trouble after the Open, but decided to play Sunday against Juan Martin del Potro. Juan and the pain proved to be too much for Nole, and he had to retire from the match, handing the tie over to Argentina.

It was Spain over France (4-1) and Argentina over Serbia (3-2) in the World Group Semi-Finals.

There was also drama Down Under, as Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka played for Switzerland, trying to win a slot in the 2012 World Group. It all came down to the 5th match on Sunday with Stan the Man vs. Rusty; Wawrinka and Hewitt played an epic match. Patrick Rafter was about to blow his top arguing with the chair umpire on Sunday, before the chair finally agreed to postpone the remainder of the match until Monday because of darkness. It took just one game, and Stan sealed a place for Switzerland in the 2012 World Group.

The draw for the 2012 Davis Cup will take place in Bangkok this Wednesday. The U.S. remains a seeded nation in the World Group, despite losing to Spain back in July’s Quarterfinals.

The 2011 Fed Cup Finals take place at Olympic Stadium in Moscow November 5th and 6th – as Russia faces the Czech Republic.

After losing in the first-round this year, the United States is no-longer in the World Group, and will play Belarus in Fed Cup’s second-tier, at home in the U.S. on Super Bowl weekend (February 4th and 5th)…Serena Williams has committed to play for Captain Mary Jo Fernandez.

And its important to point out – just like this past weekend with Davis Cup play – the ladies will be playing Fed Cup Tennis just a week removed from one of the sport’s four Grand Slams, the Australian Open.

I haven’t yet heard who is hosting this upcoming Fed Cup Tie, but I’ll let you know as soon as I find out!
