Monica Puig makes history. Andy Murray reclaims Gold
MONICA PUIG SHINES IN RIO. ANDY MURRAY TOPS PODIUM AGAIN.
History was made at the 2016 Rio Games. Monica Puig became the first athlete representing Puerto Rico ever to capture Gold at the Summer Games.
Meanwhile, Andy Murray topped the podium for a second time, defeating an inspired Juan Martin Del Potro in the Gold Medal match. Still on the mend from wrist surgery — as a Rio Wild Card, Del Potro upset World #1 Novak Djokovic in the 1st-Round……and couldn’t stop winning.
Though Rafael Nadal fell in the Singles Bronze Medal match to Kei Nishikori, Rafa teamed with Marc Lopez to capture Doubles Gold.
Team USA earned both Gold and Silver in Mixed Doubles, with Jack Sock medaling twice. He backed up Mixed Gold with Men’s Doubles Bronze.
The Czech Republic fared well, winning Bronze in Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
* Tournament Format: For both the men and women, it was the best of 3-sets, without a tie-break in the 3rd and deciding set. In the men’s singles final, however – it became the best of 5-sets, without a tie-break in the 5th and deciding set. Players and teams that fell in the Semifinals played an additional best of 3-sets match to determine the bronze medalist.
