2014 Week-14: Davis Cup World Group Quarterfinals

27 nations hosted Davis Cup Ties over the weekend…one was allowed a postponement. Parliamentary elections in Jakarta, Indonesia forced last weekend’s Group II Playoff Tie with Hong Kong to be pushed back to the end of the month.

  • The Czech Republic easily advanced to its 3rd consecutive Semifinal with a 5-0 win over Japan…they’ll face France in September
  • Gael Monfils was the hero in France, clinching the Tie over Germany with a 3-set, 5th-rubber win over Peter Gojowczyk. With losses from both Benneteau and Tsonga on Day-1, Team France had to deliver 3 consecutive wins to advance
  • Fabio Fognini played out of his mind for Team Italy over the weekend. He took four-sets to defeat Great Britain’s James Ward, then delivered a huge 3-set win over Andy Murray in the 4th rubber. Andreas Seppi then clinched the QF-Tie for Italy with a 5th-rubber win over Ward…Italy will face Switzerland in September
  • Roger Federer delivered a clutch 5th-rubber Tie-clinching win for Switzerland on Sunday. Stan Wawrinka lost his singles rubber on Friday, then he and Roger lost the doubles rubber on Saturday. Both singles wins on Sunday were critical. Roger was undoubtedly the backbone of this Tie

In Group I play…

  • Marin Cilic delivered Croatia to the World Group Playoffs this September with a remarkable come-from-behind 4th-rubber win over Jerzy Janowicz. Cilic was down 0-2 before battling back to win the final 3-sets and the Tie for Team Croatia
  • Uzbekistan reached the World Group Playoffs with a 5-set, 5th-rubber win from Farrukh Dustov over China

In Group II play…

  • After Day-1, Pakistan was down 0-2 to the Philippines – but managed a comeback win behind Aisam Qureshi. They’ll now compete in September for a spot in Davis Cup Group I
  • Lithuania’s Laurynas Grigelis delivered a clutch 5th-rubber win over South Africa
  • Bosnia Herzegovina’s Mirza Basic won both of his singles rubbers. In fact, he too battled 5-sets in a 5th and deciding rubber to defeat Finland

In the Group II Playoffs…

  • The biggest clutch win came from Harshana Godamanna of Sri Lanka, winning a 3-setter in the 5th-rubber to send Vietnam back to Group III for 2015
