Elina Svitolina def Evgeniya Rodina 64 64

Ask any drummer. There’s rhythm, and then there’s RHYTHM. Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina has become the Keith Moon or John Bonham of the WTA Tour, pounding through titles like epic solos. She started the year as the World #14. After winning 5-titles, including the Premiers in Dubai, Rome and Toronto, she is now the World #4. With a deep run here in Flushing, she is one of a handful of ladies who could exit New York as the #1 Player in the World.

Evgeniya Rodina dominated Genie Bouchard yesterday on Ashe, but because that was a carry-over match thanks to Tuesday’s rain, she didn’t get the luxury of a day-off between the first and second rounds. The Russian did show some poise down 2-breaks in the second, breaking Svitolina while she served for the match. But Elina got another crack at it, and booked her ticket for Round-3 after the change-over.

Saturday will be Svitolina’s third consecutive stab at the US Open’s third round. Two years ago, she fell to Ekaterina Makarova (eventual Semifinalist). Last year, Petra Kvitova took her down (reached the Round of 16).
