Never comment on the appearance of her baking…

Just a small piece of advice to husbands who haven’t yet learned this lesson…

When the house is filled with the wonderful aroma of fresh baked cookies and your wife is proudly standing next to a rack of tasty, homemade baked desserts…

When she welcomes you over for a sample, gleam of achievement in her eye…

Even if it’s surprising, even if you mean it as a compliment, before your first bite, don’t let the first words out of your mouth be:

“Wow, they’re not black on the bottom this time!”

You won’t get that first bite – in fact, you probably won’t get a single cookie.

And so I learn again – in a marriage, the best reaction to the appearance of someone’s baking or cooking is indifference…implying that you’d never be surprised that it turned out so well – after all, she’s fantastic in the kitchen ALL THE TIME!

When you taste the cooking…then it’s okay to be surprised at its remarkable flavor (even if it tastes like ox-rectum), and its appearance.

Actually, scratch that…to be safe – regardless of circumstance…never comment on the appearance of food prepared by your wife. It’s a trap. Say something negative, you’re in trouble – say something positive, you’re implying that it hasn’t been that good in the past.

The only situation where you can comment on food’s appearance is when it was prepared at a restaurant or prepared by someone else – and the correct phrase EVERY time is: “Didn’t look or taste as good as yours!”
