Indian Wells 2014 – First Round Play starts Today

WTA first round action starts today at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, while the guys wrap-up qualifying matches for the BNP Paribas Open 2014. The top-32 seeds in both draws receive a first-round bye at this year’s tournament. In the ladies draw, eight Wild Cards are in the mix, including Americans Coco Vandeweghe, Victoria Duval, Shelby Rogers and Taylor Townsend. American Wild Cards on the guys’ side include Jack Sock, Ryan Harrison, Rhyne Williams, Rajeev Ram and Steve Johnson.

Yesterday, with the help of Jack Sock, fans got a chance to help with the making of this year’s ATP draw; 32 of which joined Jack on stage for a photo-op and chip selection. Immediately following the draw, Rafael Nadal arrived for a mural unveiling in Stadium Plaza, as fans stampeded to get a close-up shot of the World #1. Two of Mike Sullivan’s creations can now be seen just outside the entrance of Stadium-1 – a mural of John McEnroe (unveiled over the weekend) and now Rafael Nadal.

The Desert Smash at La Quinta Resort & Club

Last night, Will Ferrell hosted the Desert Smash just down the road from the Indian Wells Tennis Garden – a benefit for “Cancer for College.” Play started with Will and his wife teaming up against Rebel Wilson and Joel McHale. Then Bob and Mike Bryan took the court for some pre BNP Paribas Open fun with Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero. Doubles play continued with RedFoo and Donald Young versus Boris Kodjoe and Sam Querrey before Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova took the court for a little exhibition play.

Finally, Will teamed with Novak Djokovic – sporting a Will Ferrell tennis wig and headband – and took on Kevin Spacey and Australian Open Champion Stanislas Wawrinka. When Novak wasn’t comparing abs with Will, he did admit that he still has nightmares of his semifinal loss to Stan in Melbourne. The party then moved to “The Show at Agua Caliente in Rancho Mirage, featuring a concert with Nelly, Boys II Men, RedFoo and the La Freak Crew.

Meanwhile, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Victoria Azarenka, Grigor Dimitrov and Milos Raonic spent the day filming television commercials for Wilson Tennis…spots that will air worldwide later this year through 2015.
