Indian Wells: Day-2. ATP and WTA Qualifying

On an International Women’s Day that saw celebrations of the sport with World Tennis Day at Madison Square Garden and the Desert Smash in Mission Hills, 64-players from around the world continued their quest just to reach the main-draw of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. By the end of the day, 12 ladies delivered on that goal, including American Taylor Townsend – who, after winning the pre-qualifying tournament, has now played eight matches just to get to this point. That’s endurance. 24 men are a step closer to the main-draw with their first-round qualifying wins on Tuesday. How they fare Wednesday determines their fate.

Nearly all of the draws have been released, including the WTA doubles draw. The only one remaining is the ATP Doubles draw, which should be released on Wednesday. It’s always interesting to see who’s decided to team-up here in the desert, and the ladies doubles draw is no exception this year. You can find all of the updated draws for this year’s BNP Paribas Open below…as well as highlights from World Tennis Day and the Desert Smash.

Here on Stadium-2, we featured five qualifying matches on Tuesday – including wins from Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend. Both earned spots in the main draw. Then first-round qualifying got underway with the ATP World Tour. Austin Krajicek, Radek Stepanek and Edouard Roger-Vasselin posted wins and will compete for a spot in the main-draw on Wednesday.

KATERINA SINIAKOVA. Qualifying. Round-2.

With only a slight hiccup in the second-set, Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic dominated American Julie Boserup to reach the main draw 6-0, 6-2. She will face Dominika Cibulkova for the first-time in Wednesday’s fourth match here on Stadium-2. Siniakova played through to the second-round of the BNP Paribas Open last year, where she fell to Svetlana Kuznetsova.

TAYLOR TOWNSEND. Qualifying. Round-2.

Taylor Townsend has to be exhausted. In her fourth BNP Paribas Open, this is the hardest she’s ever had to battle just to get into the main-draw. She had to win six matches in the pre-qualifying tournament to win a wild-card to the Qualies. After her win Monday over Evgeniya Rodina, she took-out the talented Latvian Anastasija Sevastova on Tuesday 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 – her first three-setter over the past eight days. Here’s her results from the BNP Paribas Open Challenge, leading up to Monday…

With Tuesday’s win – mission accomplished. Taylor is in the main-draw where she will face Vania King Wednesday in the third match on Stadium-1. The two have played once before, in the first round at Roland Garros. Taylor won that match 7-5, 6-1. Look out, Vania – Taylor is obviously in rhythm.

AUSTIN KRAJICEK. Qualifying. Round-1.

Austin Krajicek comes into Indian Wells as the #2 qualifying seed. After a routine 6-1 thrashing in the first-set, Tuesday’s match with Brazil’s Caio Zampieri got interesting. After dropping the second, the two battled through to a deciding tie-break, where the American advanced to round-2 of qualifying 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(4). Squeeker. NEXT UP: Vincent Millot of France in Wednesday’s second match on Stadium-5.

RADEK STEPANEK. Qualifying. Round-1.

Honestly, Victor Hanescu was a tough qualifying draw for Czech Davis Cup stalwart Radek Stepanek, but he was up to the challenge. After delivering a hard-fought first set 7-5, Hanescu raced to force a decider. Stepanek then stepped it up, reaching round-2 of qualies with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 win over the Romanian. NEXT UP: American Bjorn Frantangelo in Wednesday’s third match on Stadium-7.

EDOUARD ROGER-VASSELIN. Qualifying. Round-1

It would have been cool to see Los Angeles native Ernesto Escobedo make it to the main-draw…and he came close on Tuesday against Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin. They split with dominant first two sets, then thrilled with a tight tie-break in the decider. Final: Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(5). NEXT UP: Agentine Marco Trungelliti in Wednesday’s final match on Stadium-5.

Fun night at Madison Square Garden in New York with Gael Monfils, Stan Wawrinka, Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams. Not that anyone was really “keeping track,” but Stan was victorious over Monfils 7-6, 6-3; while Serena delivered another win over Caroline 7-5, 6-4. As always, World Tennis Day was a fun celebration of the sport, featuring plenty of adorable moments…like the ladies’ mini-me’s who joined them on the bench.
